What is a Neuron?

A neuron is a cell that sends and receives information or signals from your brain. Neurons are the fundamental unit of the nervous system. A neuron consists of three main parts: dendrites, axons and a cell body or soma. The functions of the three parts of the neuron are as follows:

• Dendrites: These are the branch-like structures that receive signals from other body cells. The tiny protrusion on the dendrites is called spines. 
• Axons: These are root-like structures on a neuron that carry information from soma to other cells and release neurotransmitters. 
• A cell body: This is a body of a neuron that consists of a nucleus and synthesizes proteins. 

Neurons get signals from the dendrites and axons. There are two types of neurons based on connection and function, such as efferent neurons that receive information from the brain and send it to the other parts of the body. In contrast, afferent neurons receive information from the other parts of the body and send it to the central nervous system. Besides this, there are three types of neurons based on their function: sensory, relay and motor.

Easy Science Project: Neuron Project 

In elementary school, science is a crucial subject for children. Therefore, they are introduced to different science concepts effectively to understand the basic information from an early age. Once they get to higher grades, the concepts will be taught in a detailed way. One of the essential concepts is learning about neurons. Kids can take up a neuron project and create a model that helps them know about the structure and function of a neuron creatively. This is one of the best science project ideas for kids. 

Aim of the Project 

To make a neuron model using the materials available at home. Label the parts and learn the function of a neuron in a systematic way.

Materials Required 

• A chart paper 
• A pen and an eraser
• A scissor
• Colorful woolen threads
• Playdough 
• A coffee bean
• A marker 

Procedure

• Provide basic information about neurons to children to understand and work on making a neuron model in an effective way.
• Explain the parts of a neuron to children before they start building a neuron model.
• Show how a neuron looks and some visual information to understand the concept of making a neuron model easily.  
• Besides explaining the parts of a neuron, you can also explain to them the functions of a neuron and its role in the nervous system. 
• Take a chart paper and draw an outline of a neuron with dendrites, axons and a cell body with a nucleus. 
• Take a piece of play dough and make a circular-shaped structure. Paste it at the center of the chart paper as a cell body of a neuron. 
• Then, take a small coffee bean and place it at the center of the playdough as a nucleus. 
• Take a few colorful threads and stick them around the playdough to give the appearance of dendrites. Make sure that it looks like a branch-like structure. 
• Then, take a long woolen thread and paste it below the playdough as an axon covered with another layer of thread as a myelin sheath. 
• Later, paste a few woolen threads in the form of a branch-like structure at the tip of the axon to give an appearance of axon terminals. 
• Label the parts of a neuron with a marker. 

Result 

It was observed that kids were able to successfully make a model of a neuron with the materials available at home easily. Besides this, they were able to label the structure of a neuron and understand its function in a detailed way.
