How to Demagnetize a Magnet?

We often see children playing with magnets to attract the metal objects. They enjoy doing it and love the way it attracts the objects. Children are aware that magnets have magnetic fields that attract metal objects towards them. Magnets are usually made up of iron or manganese. These magnets have magnetic properties. How to demagnetize a magnet? There are numerous ways through which you can demagnetize a magnet. To teach children how to demagnetize a magnet, you can conduct an easy science experiment for kids. This experiment will enable children to see how the magnetic field of a magnet is removed.

Contents

The best way to demagnetize a magnet would be to heat it so that the orientation of magnetic poles are destroyed. You can even hit it with a hammer so that the orientation of magnetic poles are disrupted. Besides this, there are many other methods through which you can demagnetize a magnet. This is an important concept for kids to understand and perform an experiment so that they can enhance their scientific knowledge on magnetic properties of an object.

What is Demagnetization?

Sometimes, metallic objects, if not in use, can cause problems when they have magnetic properties. It may attract the objects unnecessarily. To avoid such situations, you need to demagnetize a magnet. Before that, children must know what demagnetization is. Demagnetization is the process of removing magnetic fields from the metals. There are different ways through which you can demagnetize a magnet, such as heating a magnet under high temperature, hammering a magnet, leaving a magnet unused for a long time, and dropping a magnet from a distance on the floor.

Easy Science Project: How to Demagnetize a Magnet?

To help children understand the concept of demagnetization, we’ve got you an experiment that enables them to observe how magnets are demagnetized. Children can do this experiment at home or in the classroom under the guidance of elders. This enables children to understand about the magnetic properties of metals and ways to demagnetize them.

How to Demagnetize a Magnet?

Aim of the Project

To experiment and observe the factors responsible for demagnetizing the magnetic properties of a metal.

Materials Required

  • A magnet
  • A bunch of nails
  • A burner
  • A hammer
  • A paper and a pen

Procedure

  • Take a few nails and keep them in front of a magnetized iron metal.
  • Observe and record the number of nails attracted to a magnet on a sheet of paper.
  • Then, take a magnet and heat it under the burner for some time.
  • Remove the magnet and keep a few nails in front of it.
  • Observe and record the number of nails attracted towards it.
  • Take another magnet and hit it with a hammer continuously for some time.
  • Keep a few nails in front of a magnet and observe the number of nails that get attracted to it.
  • Record the numbers on a sheet of paper.

Result

It was observed that the magnet heated and hammered did not attract nails. It showed less magnetic properties compared to the magnet, which did not undergo heating or hammering. The heating and hammering of a magnet disrupted the orientation of magnetic poles and removed the magnetic field.
