Factors

What are the factors of a number? These are the numbers that divide the original number evenly without leaving the remainder. Each number consists of many factors other than one and the number itself. You can introduce kids to factors in elementary school, where they understand how to calculate multiplication and division problems. Introducing math games for kids would help them recognize the factors of a number and solve related problems efficiently.

What are the Factors?

Factors are the numbers that evenly divide the integer without leaving the remainder. You can use the division method to find the factors of a number. For example, the factors of 12 have four factors other than one and the number itself. The factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12. Similarly, pair factors are the numbers obtained when two integers are multiplied in pairs to get the original number. For example, the pair factors of 12 are (1, 12), (2, 6), and (3, 4). Besides this, the prime factors are the numbers that divide the original number with the prime numbers to get the quotient one. For example, the prime factors of 12 are  2 x 2 x 3 = 22 x 3. To find the pair and prime factors of a number, you can use multiplication and prime factorization methods.

Properties of Factors

A few properties of factors are mentioned below.

  • Every factor of a number has factors other than one and the number itself.
  • The factors of 0 and 1 do not have more factors other than the number itself as it is neither prime nor composite number.
  • Factors of a number can be calculated using the multiplication or division method.
  • The factors of a number can be positive or negative but not a decimal or a fraction number.
  • Every factor of a number has 1 as one of the factors except for 0.

How to Find the Factors of a Number?

To find the factors of a number, you can divide the original number with the integer evenly without leaving the remainder. For example, you can find the factors of 36 using the division method.

36/1 = 36

36/2 = 18

36/3 = 12

36/4 = 9

36/6 = 6

36/9 = 4

36/12 = 3

36/18 = 2

36/36 = 1

Therefore, the factors of 36 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12, 18, and 36.

To find the pair factors of a number, you need to multiply the numbers together to get the original number. For example, you can find the pair factors of 48 using the multiplication method.

1 x 48 = 48

2 x 24 = 48

3 x 16 = 48

4 x 12 = 48

6 x 8 = 48

8 x 6 = 48

12 x 4 = 48

16 x 3 = 48

24 x 2 = 48

48 x 1 = 48

Therefore, the pair factors of 48 are (1, 48), (2, 24), (3, 16), (4, 12) and (6, 8).

To find the prime factors of a number, you need to divide the original number with the prime numbers until you get a quotient one. For example, you can find the prime factors of 30 using the prime factorization method.

Step 1: Divide the original number 30 with prime number 2

30/2 = 15

Step 2: Again, divide the number 15 with the prime number 3 as it is not divisible by the number 2.

15/3 = 5

Step 3: Finally, divide the number 5 with the prime number 5 as it is not divisible by the number 3.

5/5 = 1

Therefore, the prime factors of 30 are 2 x 3 x 5.

Solved Examples on Factors

Some solved examples of factors of a number are mentioned below.

Example 1: Find the common factors of 24 and 28

Solution: Factors of 24 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24

Factors of 28 = 1, 2, 4, 7, 14, 28

Therefore, the common factors of 24 and 28 are 1, 2, and 4.

Example 2: The baker baked 30 blueberry muffins for his customers. He distributed all the blueberry muffins equally to 10 customers. How many blueberry muffins did each customer receive?

Solution: Number of blueberry muffins = 30

Number of customers = 10

Total number of blueberry muffins received by each customer = 30/10 = 3

Therefore, the total number of blueberry muffins received by each customer is 3.
