## What is Regrouping?

Regrouping, in math, is just another word for carrying and borrowing. In addition with regrouping, the numbers with 2 or more digits are separated into groups of tens and ones. To learn this method, your child should have a good understanding of the place value system. When we say regrouping, it means you change the 10 ones into 1 ten. For example: Let’s find out how much 17+13 is.

If you’re confident in mental math, you already know that the answer to 17 + 13 = 30. But if you’re still learning how to add more than one digit, let’s add using regrouping.

Now let’s add the digits in the ones column, when you add 7 and 3, you get 10. But can’t place more than one digit in the ones column. So, let’s regroup. To do this, place the 0 (in pink) from the number 10 (7 + 3)  in the ones column and place the number 1 ( in pink) in the tens column. When you do this it shows that you have 0 ones and an additional 10. Once you’re done regrouping, add the number in the tens column. So, 1 + 1 + 1 = 3.

So, 17 + 13 = 30.

Let’s try another example. Let’s find out how much 45 + 35 is.

Now add the two digits in the ones column, so 5 + 5 = 10. Then, place 0 in the ones column and 1 in the tens column. And then add the digits in the tens column. So, 1 + 4 + 3 = 8.

Therefore, 45 + 35 = 80.

Now let’s try adding 3 digit numbers using regrouping.

Let’s find out how much 187 + 245 is.

First, add the numbers in the ones column. So, 7 + 5 = 12. Now, place the 2 in the ones column and carry over the 1 to the tens column.

Then, add the numbers in the tens column, so 1 + 8 + 4 = 13. Place the 3 in the tens column and place the 1 in the hundreds column.

Finally, add the numbers in the hundreds column. So, 1 + 1 + 2 = 4.

Therefore, 187 + 245 = 432.

Now let’s find out how to add three 4-digit numbers. Let’s find out what 1432 + 4648 + 2145 is.

First, add the numbers in the ones column. So, 2 + 8 + 5 = 15. Place the 5 in the ones column and carry over the 1 to the tens column.

Then add the numbers in the tens column, so 1 + 3 + 4 + 4 = 12. Now, place the 2 in the tens column and carry over 1 to the hundreds column.

Then add the numbers in the hundreds column, so 1 + 4 + 6 + 1 = 12. Now place the 2 in the hundreds column and carry over the 1 to the thousands column.

Now add all the numbers in the thousands column, so 1 + 1 + 4 + 2 = 8.

So, 1432 + 4648 + 2145 = 8225.
