Math may be full of problems, but there are several different ways to solve these problems. If your child finds it difficult to learn one concept, there will always be a different method which they can understand. Regrouping is one such concept. It is a great way to help your child learn how to add and subtract numbers with 2 or more digits easily.

What is Regrouping?

Regrouping, in math, is just another word for carrying and borrowing. In addition with regrouping, the numbers with 2 or more digits are separated into groups of tens and ones. To learn this method, your child should have a good understanding of the place value system. When we say regrouping, it means you change the 10 ones into 1 ten. For example: Let’s find out how much 17+13 is.

If you’re confident in mental math, you already know that the answer to 17 + 13 = 30. But if you’re still learning how to add more than one digit, let’s add using regrouping.

TensOnes
17
+13

Now let’s add the digits in the ones column, when you add 7 and 3, you get 10. But can’t place more than one digit in the ones column. So, let’s regroup. To do this, place the 0 (in pink) from the number 10 (7 + 3)  in the ones column and place the number 1 ( in pink) in the tens column. When you do this it shows that you have 0 ones and an additional 10. Once you’re done regrouping, add the number in the tens column. So, 1 + 1 + 1 = 3.

TensOnes
1
17
+13
=30

So, 17 + 13 = 30.

Let’s try another example. Let’s find out how much 45 + 35 is.

TensOnes
45
+35

Now add the two digits in the ones column, so 5 + 5 = 10. Then, place 0 in the ones column and 1 in the tens column. And then add the digits in the tens column. So, 1 + 4 + 3 = 8.

TensOnes
1
45
+35
=80

Therefore, 45 + 35 = 80.

Now let’s try adding 3 digit numbers using regrouping.

Let’s find out how much 187 + 245 is.

HundredsTensOnes
187
+245

First, add the numbers in the ones column. So, 7 + 5 = 12. Now, place the 2 in the ones column and carry over the 1 to the tens column.

Then, add the numbers in the tens column, so 1 + 8 + 4 = 13. Place the 3 in the tens column and place the 1 in the hundreds column.

Finally, add the numbers in the hundreds column. So, 1 + 1 + 2 = 4.

HundredsTensOnes
11
187
+245
=432

Therefore, 187 + 245 = 432.

Now let’s find out how to add three 4-digit numbers. Let’s find out what 1432 + 4648 + 2145 is.

ThousandsHundredsTensOnes
1432
+4648
2145

First, add the numbers in the ones column. So, 2 + 8 + 5 = 15. Place the 5 in the ones column and carry over the 1 to the tens column.

Then add the numbers in the tens column, so 1 + 3 + 4 + 4 = 12. Now, place the 2 in the tens column and carry over 1 to the hundreds column.

Then add the numbers in the hundreds column, so 1 + 4 + 6 + 1 = 12. Now place the 2 in the hundreds column and carry over the 1 to the thousands column.

Now add all the numbers in the thousands column, so 1 + 1 + 4 + 2 = 8.

+4648
+2145
=8225

So, 1432 + 4648 + 2145 = 8225.

Now that we know how to add using the regrouping method, let’s practice. Constant practice will help you learn how to add bigger numbers quickly using the regrouping method. Here are some worksheets that’ll help you practice addition with regrouping.
