18 | X | 3 | = | 54 |
18 | X | 4 | = | 72 |
18 | X | 5 | = | 90 |
18 | X | 6 | = | 108 |
18 | X | 7 | = | 126 |
18 | X | 8 | = | 144 |
18 | X | 9 | = | 162 |
18 | X | 10 | = | 180 |
Look at the table of 18 and recite it loudly several times, write it down until you have it memorized. Test yourself by writing the 18 times table without looking at the chart. If you still need help, go through the chart again. Here are a few simple tips and tricks to help you learn the 18 times multiplication table easily.
Simple tips and tricks to learn the 18 times table
18 is half of 9, double the multiples of 9
If you’re confident with the 9 times table but struggling to learn the 18 times table, this trick is the perfect solution. 18 is nothing but 2 times 9. So all you have to do is double the multiples of 9 to get the answers to the 18 times multiplication table. Here is an example.
Let’s find out the answer to 18 X 5.
First, divide 18 in half. 18 divided by 2 is 9.
Now multiply 9 by 5. 9 X 5 = 45
Now double the answer, 45 + 45 = 90
So, 18 X 5 = 90.
Let’s try another example.
Let’s find out what 18 X 3 is.
First, divide 18 in half. 18 divided by 2 is 9.
Now multiply 9 by 3. 9 X 3 = 27
Now double the answer, 27 +27 = 54
So, 18 X 3 = 54.
The underlying pattern
The 18 times table has a very cool underlying pattern. Learn to exploit that and you’ll soon be reciting the 18 times multiplication table like a pro. Look at the table below.
18 X 1 = 1 8
18 X 2 = 3 6
18 X 3 = 5 4
18 X 4 = 7 2
18 X 5 = 9 0
18 X 6 = 10 8
18 X 7 = 12 6
18 X 8 = 14 4
18 X 9 = 16 2
18 X 10 = 18 0
Look at the numbers in the tens column (in purple). In the first half of the table, the answers start with odd numbers in the sequence 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. And in the second half of the table, the answers start with even numbers in the sequence 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18.
Now look at the digits in the ones column 9 (in green). In the first half of the 18 times table, the answer ends with the digits 8, 6, 4, 2 and 0. The pattern is repeated in the second half of the table. Remember this trick and you can learn the 18 times multiplication table in no time at all.
Adding natural numbers to the 17 times table
Here is another cool trick to learn the 18 times multiplication table. We have already learnt the 17 times table. So, let’s use the table of 17 to calculate the answers to the table of 18. All you need to do is add natural numbers, in sequential order, to the multiples of 17. This will give you the multiples of 18. Look at the table below.
17 times table | Multiples of 17 + natural numbers | Multiples of 18
17 | X | 1 | 17 + 1 | = | 18 |
17 | X | 2 | 34 + 2 | = | 36 |
17 | X | 3 | 51 + 3 | = | 54 |
17 | X | 4 | 68 + 4 | = | 72 |
17 | X | 5 | 85 + 5 | = | 90 |
17 | X | 6 | 102 +6 | = | 108 |
17 | X | 7 | 119 + 7 | = | 126 |
17 | X | 8 | 136 + 8 | = | 144 |
17 | X | 9 | 153 + 9 | = | 162 |
17 | X | 10 | 170 + 10 | = | 180 |
Adding natural numbers to the tens digits of the 8 times table
Another easy way to learn the 18 times table is through the 8 times table. For this you’ll need a firm understanding of the place value system. Remember the sequence of numbers in the one’s column of table of 8? 8, 6, 4, 2, 0. Fill in these digits in the ones column of the 18 times multiplication table.
Now add natural numbers to the digits in the tens column of the multiples of 8. This will give you the digits in the tens column of the 18 times table. Look at the table below.
8 times table | Add natural numbers | Multiples of 18
8 | X | 1 | = | 8 | 0 + 1 = 1 | 18 |
8 | X | 2 | = | 16 | 1 + 2 = 3 | 36 |
8 | X | 3 | = | 24 | 2 + 3 = 5 | 54 |
8 | X | 4 | = | 32 | 3 + 4 = 7 | 72 |
8 | X | 5 | = | 40 | 4 + 5 = 9 | 90 |
8 | X | 6 | = | 48 | 4 + 6 = 10 | 108 |
8 | X | 7 | = | 56 | 5 + 7 = 12 | 126 |
8 | X | 8 | = | 64 | 6 + 8 = 14 | 144 |
8 | X | 9 | = | 72 | 7 + 9 = 16 | 162 |
As you can see, we added natural numbers in sequential order from the first to the fifth rows. The number 4 is repeated in the 6th row and continues in sequential order till the 9th row.
